Southport Racquet Club to Host “Block Party” for Hurricane Sandy Relief
Join us on Friday, December 7th from 6-9PM for this Fundraiser to Benefit
Trinity Parish Nursery School
the American Red Cross
Off the heels of Hurricane Sandy and with the holidays ahead, many of us are settling back into our routines. One doesn’t have to look far, however, to find neighbors, friends and family whose lives are anything but routine. Responding to the need to provide relief to local organizations now battling back from the effects of Hurricane Sandy, the Southport Racquet Club announced that it will host a local “block party” to raise funds for Trinity Parish Nursery School, Operation Hope, and the American Red Cross. The event will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Friday night, December 7th at the Southport Racquet Club, 226 Old Post Road, Southport, CT 06890. Light fare, drinks and music will be provided and admission is free. All guests are asked to consider making a donation to one of the three organizations which will be represented at this event.
“Over the past couple of weeks, I have heard story after story of how our neighbors in this community have been heavily impacted by Hurricane Sandy,” said Timothy Taylor, General Manager of the Southport Racquet Club. “We see this event as one way we can make a positive difference. We want to say thank you to those who have done so much already and we want to help bring the community together to focus on the work that still needs to be done. This is a night for the whole area to come together and take a deep breath. We realize other areas have been hit hard but one does not have to look far to see that our friends and neighbors have suffered a great deal too.”
The organizations were chosen based on their need and the important work they now have under way in the local community. Specifically:
Operation Hope, based in Fairfield, serves those who are hungry, homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Attendees will have the opportunity to support Operation Hope’s programs and services through a direct contribution to the organization.
Trinity Episcopal Church’s Nursery School, library and offices were severely impacted by the storm. All four of the Church’s furnaces were destroyed as were the entire ground floor electrical system and the air-handler. The Nursery School’s 120 children and teachers have relocated to Holy Trinity Greek Church in Bridgeport while extensive building repairs are made. Their first day at the temporary location was this past Monday, November 19th.
Fairfield town officials and emergency personnel have referred those who wish to help their neighbors impacted by Hurricane Sandy to the American Red Cross. Attendees will have the opportunity to support local Red Cross programs and services through a gift to the local chapter. Such gifts will support the Red Cross chapter serving the local Fairfield community.
Contributions to all three organizations are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.
“We are in awe of the outpouring of sympathy and support Trinity has received since the flooding,” said The Rev. Nicholas T. Porter, Rector of Trinity Episcopal Church. “We are especially grateful for Southport Racquet Club’s kindness in creating this very special evening to benefit this community that has been so hard hit by Hurricane Sandy. This shared response to the storm harkens back to a simpler time when neighbor supported neighbor in times of trial. We could not be more thankful.”
